High Fidelity Rules

Like many others, I lament the entertainment industry’s lack of originality. Still, I can’t help but feel curious, even eager, when there’s a new version of something I love. A new Batman? Spiderman? Battlestar Galactica? Tron? When I was a kid I had the lunchboxes and board games for all of them. I recently became enthusiastic about the new Perry Mason on HBO. Maybe not enthusiastic. More reboot-curious. Enough to make me watch. Which shows how compelling the idea of the reboot can be, considering I never watched the original Perry Mason.

When I first heard they were remaking High Fidelity I was hesitant but excited. I loved the movie when it came out. John Cusack, Jack Black and the other guy, Todd Louiso (I admit I had to look him up), were great. The women were smart and beautiful, my 20 something year old self’s dream. Lisa Bonet. Catherine Zeta Jones. Iben Hjejle (Had to look her up as well). Critics said that it captured my generation. At least a certain demographic. My demographic. White. Male. Generation X. College educated, urban living, indie loving, sensitive seeming. …
